olive theory
working at the intersection of live performance and installation
olive theory is an interdisciplinary performance duo co-founded by dance artist Shion Skye Carter (she/they) and musician Stefan Nazarevich (he/him). Carter, a queer Japanese Canadian dancer and choreographer, brings her skills in choreographing contemporary dance that ranges from visceral and dynamic to subtle and minute. Nazarevich is a Ukrainian Canadian composer trained in both classical piano and electronics, and shares his passion for analog synthesizers and building improvisational sound scores.
Together, they blur the lines between artistic disciplines and collaborate to experiment at the intersection between embodied performance, installation art, and live sound by integrating their respective artistic disciplines while drawing from their mutual interest in sculptural visual art forms. The duo pushes the boundaries of collaboration by sharing their respective skills with one another to create truly interdisciplinary, intimate performances. Inviting audiences to interact with and contribute to the improvisational decisions that shape their performances in the moment, Stefan and Shion strive to inspire those around them to approach life and art-making with curiosity, experimentation, and questioning.
